And we're still paying the price

Isikoff's and Corn's detailed, and well-researched, book about the lead-up to America's second war on Iraq is heartbreaking, in the sense that so many Americans felt at the time that waging war against Iraq was both non-sensical and immoral, but they just didn't have the counter-intelligence to challenge the Bush administration's assumptions and rhetoric.
Now, with this book and 20/20 historical hindsight on their side, those Americans can feel vindicated. In particular, in the last couple chapters the authors dutifully bring to light the reports from two separate heads of the Iraq Survey Group, whose sole mission was to find the WMDs on which the Bush administration based its reason for war, that refute every assertion that Iraq supposedly had WMDs and was about to use them on the U.S. The Iraq Survey Group determined that there were no nuclear weapons, no mobile biological weapons labs, no stockpiles of chemical weapons, and no UAVs that could possibly carry any bio and/or chemical weapons and hit American targets.
Reading this book made me sad for the simple fact that I still remember the Bush administration's charges of WMD and Iraqi complicity with al-Qaeda, and disbelieving all of that nonsense. I remember clearly being outraged that the public was lapping up the absurdity of an Iraqi attack on the U.S. and the mainstream media's willingness to repeat the administration's rhetoric, without very much questioning.
Hubris reaffirms for me that I wasn't going crazy all those years ago. As I read the book, it helped me piece the puzzle together as to what kind of sordid fraud had been perpetrated by the Bush administration to convince the American public that the U.S. needed to wage war on Iraq in 2003.
Suffice it to say, pay close attention to the fates of the major proponents of the war with Iraq as explained in the book and you'll more fully understand what "hubris" really is.
