A fascinating period in American history

It's 1850 and young Quaker Honor Bright is embarking on the journey of a lifetime. Her sister Grace is going to marry a man in America, and because of a personal tragedy, Honor decides to leave England with her.

Yet despite her hopes, Honor's new life quickly unravels. Suddenly she's in a new country with no concrete place or purpose.

As Honor struggles to adjust, she is also caught in the midst of other people in flux - runaway slaves, Just a few miles from Oberlin, Ohio, Honor's new hometown sees a great many desperate individuals, begging food, shelter and other assistance on their final steps to Canada.

Given her Quaker background, Honor's initial impulse is to help however she can. Yet to her surprise, other Quakers don't share her feelings. How can people whose entire existence preaches equality for all not consider blacks equals?

Over the course of a year, Honor learns the hard way just what it is she stands for, and what she is willing to risk.

As with previous novels, Chevalier takes an intriguing period in history, creating three-dimensional characters with whom readers can easily relate.

Didn't want the book to end!

I really enjoyed this book, especially the last half. Honor Bright is a very memorable character, as well as several others in this novel. I read the book in a couple of days and really didn't want it to end. The life of a Quaker in this time period was one in which I really knew nothing, but enjoyed learning more about. I would definitely read a sequel to this book.

This was a compelling story about a young woman from England, new to America, and the struggles she faces as she tries to find a place for herself among unfamiliar people, customs, and even language. Heartbreaking at times, the story is one of strength, loss, and acceptance. There were several ways the ending could have gone, and I was eager to see which direction it would take. I think the story ended the way it had to in order to stay true to the characters.
